Where DeKalb Jail Releases Go

DeKalb County Jail is a county jail operated and supervised by Sheriff Patrick Ray's DeKalb County Sheriff's Department. It is the only verified detention facility physically located in DeKalb County. A county release may place a person in the community after bond, a court order, dismissal, or time served. It may also close the local booking while transport begins to TDOC, another county jail, federal authority, or another custodian. The individual release record must resolve which path occurred.

It does not publish a plainly labeled release reason or destination. A completed timestamp is strong evidence of an exit from DeKalb County Jail, but the underlying release sheet, court order, or receiving-agency record is needed to distinguish community release from transfer.

The person leaves confinement rather than entering a new custodial agency, though court or supervision duties may remain.

Confirm a DeKalb Jail Release

The correct search starts with county evidence. No verified live roster, current-only list, release-only feed, 24-hour view, or 72-hour view exists for DeKalb County, Tennessee. The published source is a roughly weekly intake PDF. Its date range describes intakes, not a promise that every later release for those bookings appears in that edition.

1. Open the dated weekly report closest to the known intake. Match the person with stable details and read both Intake Date/Time and Release Date/Time.
2. Record the PDF's print timestamp. A populated release field reflects information entered before printing, while a blank field is inconclusive.
3. Call the sheriff when the report is old, unavailable, or missing the event. Ask for the booking and release entry by name, date range, and case or booking number.
4. Request the release type, destination, receiving agency, and any hold, detainer, transport, or transfer notation.
5. Search TDOC FOIL, TN SAVIN or VINE, BOP, the relevant court, or another jail only when the record points to that system.

DeKalb Jail Records and Contact

The sheriff is the correct custodian and first contact for a DeKalb County Jail booking. The official county page does not state records-counter hours, a release desk location, or a local request fee schedule. Call before visiting. Ask who currently serves as the Public Records Request Coordinator and which delivery methods the department accepts.

A focused request should identify the person, known aliases, approximate intake dates, and booking or court number when known. Ask for the booking or intake record, the field or document showing release date and time, release type or reason, destination or receiving agency, transport notation, and the booking photograph if needed. Request electronic copies and a cost estimate before chargeable work. Tennessee citizenship or proof may be required under the agency's lawful policy.

Under TCA §10-7-503, a covered custodian should provide records promptly. If prompt production is not possible, the custodian has seven business days to produce the record, deny it in writing with the basis, or give the time needed. That period is a response rule, not an automatic delay. Inspection is generally free unless another statute applies.

DeKalb Jail Weekly Release Report

The sheriff-generated weekly report mixes current-looking intake entries with people who already had a release timestamp when the PDF was printed. It can include name, booking image, intake and release times, bond amount, arresting agency, classification, arrest location and reason, charges, statutes, and court date. The report also contains more personal detail than most release questions require. Name, intake, release, agency, charge, and court context are usually enough to identify the event without republishing every field.

The image shows why the report is useful and limited. A dated, populated Release Date/Time can establish the county event, but the PDF is not real-time and does not replace the retained release sheet.

Sampled reports usually span seven days and sometimes eight at a print boundary. They do not establish a guaranteed publication weekday or online archive duration. Booking and census logs are kept five years under the CTAS retention schedule, while identification files remain much longer. When a web link disappears, a narrow request is the real archive route.

DeKalb Jail Census Snapshot

The April 2025 TDOC monthly jail census provides a single dated view of the facility. It is not an annual booking count, release total, average population, or average stay. The report listed DeKalb County Jail with 23 people against 52 beds, or 44.2 percent for that report.

The category counts were three TDOC backup, two local felons, three other convicted felons, five pretrial felony, eight convicted misdemeanor, two pretrial misdemeanor, and zero federal or other. These figures describe the listed custody mix on one report date. They do not show how many people were released, how long anyone stayed, or whether federal and other categories changed later.

Note: A census row measures a point in time and must not be converted into a release rate or yearly total.

DeKalb Jail Detainers and Transfers

TDOC policy recognizes that an agency “release” can occur by detainer to a Tennessee county facility. The reverse issue also matters here. Leaving DeKalb County Jail may mean that TDOC, another county, federal authority, or another named custodian received the person. Search the release destination and receiving system before using the phrase “released to the community.”

FOIL is appropriate when the record shows a felony sentence or state transport. A current TDOC incarceration location means the DeKalb event was a transfer. Parole or probation identifies community supervision. TN SAVIN covers county custody changes, while TDOC separately participates in VINE. A notice belongs to one reporting custodian, so follow any transfer into the next system.

Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator only if the release sheet or credible case record identifies immigration custody. No evidence was found that DeKalb County Jail has a current ICE detention agreement or a routine immigration role. No result in the ICE locator is also inconclusive because identity, age, timing, and coverage limits can prevent a match.

Unpublished DeKalb Jail Release Details

No official DeKalb source published standard release hours, a release door, family waiting area, transportation service, property pickup method, weekend or holiday rule, fee at release, bond schedule, pretrial services program, or sheriff app. Families should call the official jail number instead of relying on procedures from a different DeKalb County or a neighboring jail.

A September 2024 weekly report contains one weekender or time-to-serve example with a release timestamp. It proves that one intermittent sentence was processed. It does not create a countywide weekender policy or a standard early release time. Likewise, a bond amount next to a timestamp does not prove that bond caused the release. The release sheet and court order control those questions.

The CTAS retention schedule identifies a witnessed, itemized receipt for property returned at release as a permanent record. That receipt can corroborate an exit after a web record is gone, but DeKalb publishes no pickup procedure. Request the record by name rather than assuming where or how property was returned.

Did DeKalb County Jail Move?

Local officials have discussed replacement-jail choices involving the existing site and a green site. A Smithville Review report described estimates under which one option was $8.6 million to $9.3 million lower, depending on bed count. Those figures belong to planning and budget discussion, not to a completed construction announcement.
